Tell us a little bit about your background. What were you doing before Punch Needle?

I am a graphic designer, I work as a freelancer and I have always been interested in art and visuals. That is why, while working as a designer, I always dabbled in other artistic activities, I did painting, illustration, photography and pottery until I stumbled upon punch needle embroidery.

How did you get started with Punch Needle?

I discovered this embroidery technique by chance. I wanted to decorate my home with textile objects that existed in my mind but not on the market. As a self-taught, after many attempts, I learned how to use the "magic needle" and managed to proudly show off the cushions of my dreams at home. This was just the beginning of a long journey of experimentation with fabrics, yarn and many oddly shaped needles.

We'd love to hear about your creative process.

My creative process begins in the digital universe and ends manually. I like the contrast generated by designing vector illustrations on the computer and finally seeing them captured in yarn and fabric. I enjoy comparing the images of the first plan and the final result in each project. How much of that digital perfection can I reach with yarn?

How do you stay inspired?

I always look for references in social media, well known or unknown artists. But I think what inspires me the most is everyday life: what I eat, the furniture in my house, what I see through the window, the simple and absurd things in some way.

What does creativity mean to you?

Creativity is the way we solve issues of daily life, whether it is the decoration of the home, dressing, cooking, sharing our ideas ... In my case, creativity shows up when I decide how to translate my idea from my head to the fabric. I always try to show that idea in a unique way, either from the design, the color or the materials choice.

How has your work evolved over time?

I started embroidering abstract illustrations because it was the easiest and fastest way for me to design. The original idea was to embroider only pillow covers, and the abstraction was the best option to decorate a sofa. Over time I wanted to take more risks and I decided to incorporate more fun and figurative designs, illustrations of objects that are not usually seen on cushions, such as lungs, a pie chart or the front of a shirt. After embroidering my famous bearded man, I got excited about character design and dabbled in doll embroidery. Also, every time I start a new embroidery I want it to be a challenge, I don't like embroidering easy or well known things, I always try to incorporate something new either in yarns or in experimentation with new materials.

What is your favorite part about the work that you do?

I think the moment I enjoy the most is when the embroidery is almost finished (hahahah) and I spend time doing the final touches so that the work is perfect. Sometimes I only have to cut some long threads; other times I have to do some extra stitches to cover imperfections, or simply add shiny thread lines on the final work to enlive it. And of course, I love the moment of taking photos (I take all my time) and upload it to the social media!

How would you describe your work?

I like thinking my work as playful and fun. Designs that at first glance seem like childish but if you look closer you discover that they are not so naive. Pieces for your inner child (lol!).

What is your favorite piece that you have made?

It is very difficult to decide! All of them are like my children! Lol. Many pieces have a meaning or mark the beginning of a new stage, but I think my two favorite pieces are “The Dollar” and the “Suicidal King” because I made them for two very special people: my brothers. Furthermore, both embroideries were a professional challenge. For “The Dollar” I had to embroider Washington's face as a portrait and in addition too small typography. “The Suicidal King” was a design challenge, I had to adapt the illustration of a poker card to a square format and to enlive it I added silver and golden threads in addition to the traditional yarns. I am proud of both results!

What materials and tools do you use? Do you have any favorite supplier recommendations for tools, material or yarn?

I usually embroider large pieces so I mostly use thick yarn. My favorite tool is the Oxford Punch Needle #13. Moreover, there is an Argentina punch needles brand that I also love called “Mercado de Haciendo”, I always use the MINI version. If I have to make smaller details I use the punch needle pen and the Lacis Lavor needle. Since I am a vegan, I do not use natural wool, I replaced them with acrylic and cotton yarn.

What advice do you have for other artists or creatives looking to try punch needle?

I think it would be the same advice as for any other manual technique: embroider with no fear, accept mistakes and experiment. It sounds corny, but afraid of being wrong is the worst thing for the learning process. We have to accept that our first pieces are going to look ugly hahaha, but it is necessary to master any technique. Maybe it is easier start embroidery small pieces, but the error stage must exist. And of course, observe a lot and know other artists.

Where do you see your work going in the future?

I would like to meet more artists or designers to work with and make collabs. I am more interested on the artistic side of embroidery (maybe exhibitions or work with brands) and not so much on the production of house decor items.

How can the punch needle community support you and your work?

Simply by sharing my work on the social media and if you are interested in learning, you can do my Doméstika online course, it is in Spanish but with English, Portuguese and German subtitles.
